Time Tracking, Estimating and Invoicing
It took us some time to find a program that could be used by more than one team member, installed locally, had a pleasing interface, and wasn't bloody expensive. Presenting: iBiz and iBiz Server. Sorry PC users, Mac only.

iBiz & iBiz Server

Invoicing
Before we moved to iBiz, we used Blinksale. It's cheaper and exists online.

Time Tracking
This service is free and works well with Blinksale (see above).

Hourly Rate Calculator

An explanation of this form can be found below... the form. Below the form that is below. The Form is below, and the explanation is below that. Geez.

Desired Annual Salary: $

Rate: $ per hour

A simple method for figuring out an hourly rate for your services is the following:
How much do you want to make a year? Multiply that by 1.2 (salary + 20%). *This is a rough estimate to cover taxes. Now divide by 50 (52 weeks in a year, minus 2 weeks vacation), and then divide that by 40 (hours in a week, full time). Multiply that by 2, because realistically you will be able to bill 20 hours a week, if things are going well.
The result is your hourly rate. For expenses that you don't feel like eating yourself, like a new computer, add that to your desired salary total. And of course, round up the number if you get a decimal.

*The only reliable way to accurately prepare for your taxes is to speak with an accountant. We absolutely recommend you get one. This is one expense you'll be happy you paid for.

Content Management Systems

We use Expression Engine for our own websites, as well as our clients'. We recommend it above others for its wide support, strong customer service (you pay for a license, and then you get great support if you have any questions), and its ability to do almost anything needed.
